Restaurant Fire Update

On Friday afternoon, July 1, a fire broke out in the ceiling/roof area of the Bali Hai Restaurant. The roof of the building was engulfed in flames and smoke was billowing toward the ocean. The fire department responded quickly and guests and employees were advised to evacuate to the parking lot.
Damage. The right side of the Bali Hai Restaurant was virtually destroyed. The resort manager’s offices and the restrooms near the restaurant were completely destroyed. The front desk and the office behind them are usable. The Happy Talk Lounge, the Porte cochere, and the front part of the lobby are intact and usable. In fact, we are using this area as a temporary check-in area. The housekeeping and laundry area below the restaurant survived and is usable. The Sundry Shop and fitness center are closed.
Employees. Scott Pacer and all the employees did a wonderful job. We are very proud of the staff’s effort in this emergency. They were able to salvage two computers and preserved reservation information and notified the guests and employees to protect them. No one was injured in this fire and we are very pleased with that fact. Many employees, including Scott, spent all night and all the next day to deal with the fire and its aftermath and we are very pleased with Scott and all his staff. They have been very dedicated and have managed this emergency very well for us.
Insurance. The restaurant is insured by the restaurant owner and the association’s common area coverage. The restaurant is a separate commercial unit of the association and therefore is not a unit the other unit owners at HBR have to support financially. The cost of coverage and repair and reconstruction will be the responsibility of the restaurant owner and not that of the association membership.
We are still waiting for insurance adjusters to come to the property to evaluate the damage and expense of recovery. We will update you with this as we learn more. We are also waiting to learn about the exact cause of the fire. We do know that the restaurant was undergoing some renovations and repairs and contractors were on the job that day.
Resort is open for business. The HBR is open and everyone is able to continue to use their units and enjoy the resort. The pool is open following a good cleaning necessitated by the fire. The power and telephone service is working and available to all units. None of the units were affected in this fire.
