As always, safety first! Try choosing beaches with lifeguards and make sure to observe the water for 10 to 20 minutes before getting in. Be aware of the rocks or coral reef of the surrounding area. Along with your mask and snorkel gear, bring along a pair of water shoes or fins to protect your feet, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
Family Friendly Snorkeling Beaches: There are many wonderful and unique choices for enjoying snorkeling on the Island of Kauai. Here is just a small sampling of a few of the very best spots.
Lydgate Park, Keiki Pond
This pristine white sand beach on Kauai’s east shore is protected year round by a man made rock wall that make it the perfect spot for first time snorkelers and families. With posted lifeguards, restrooms, showers, picnic areas and no worries of ocean currents or crashing waves you’re sure to enjoy a relaxing, colorful fish-filled experience.
Once voted America’s best beach, Poipu Beach is actually two crescent shaped, golden sand beaches. Beach goers are no doubt to find a bit of everything. Poipu offers shallow easy-going snorkeling including a lifeguard and an ocean wading pool for young ones. Give boogie boarding a try in the light ocean waves!
Tunnels Beach is located just 30 minutes from the Hanalei Bay Resort offering one of a kind beauty. You only have to swim about 10 feet to observe an abundance of tropical fish. If you prefer to stay on the shore a sea turtle just might join you, as it’s also one of their favorite beaches!
